Happy New Year everyone!

In 2025 I completed and posted only two stories. That needs to improve this year!

1. Too Old and Powerful is the story I wrote for FKFicFest using the prompt “Found among the second-hand books”. Nick finds a translation of the Abarat. Will he be able to take the cure this time?
Gen, PG13, 8,600 words

2. Blood and Fear is the third part of my ongoing series A New Family, in which Myra and Lacroix start a relationship.
Adult, Lacroix/Myra, 15,239 words

Progress on works in progress:

1. A casefic involving Lacroix. Current status: Still 2,500 words (but I worked out most of the plot in my mind).

2. A sequel to A Shared Void (Lacroix/Natalie). Current status: Progressed from 750 to 970 words.

3. New: Part casefic, part relationship story, in which Janette is forced to move on. Current status: 400 words.

4. A Nick/Janette story with a 15th century flashback to my hometown. Current status: still 1000 words (no progress since 2019).

5. A casefic involving Janette. Current status: still 1000 words (no progress since 2020).

6. The 5th installment of the Relationship series. Current status: still 4 words (just the title - LOL)

Snowflake Challenge: A mug of coffee or hot chocolate with a snowflake shaped gingerbread cookie perched on the rim sits nestled amidst a softly bunched blanket. A few dried orange slices sit next to it.

On many of the fannish websites we use, our history is easily compileable into "pages". When we look back through those pages, sometimes we stumble upon things that we think are rather cool.

Challenge #4: Rec The Contents Of Your Last Page

Any website that you like, be it fanfiction, art, social media, or something a bit more eccentric!

Rather than actual last pages, since I feel like I've spent a lot of time the last couple of days tracking Storm Goretti (which oddly passed more or less right over me with very little impact in terms of snow), I'll just ramble that I've spent most time recently on my DW reading page, on Dark's fandom wiki to remind myself of Gretchen the dog's history for Challenge #2 as she was my chosen pet, and AO3.

Getting caught up.

Snowflake Challenge: A warmly light quaint street of shops at night with heavy snow falling.

Today’s challenge is a chance to express your love to fandom, and what better way than a love letter? If you feel really creative, the letter doesn’t have to come from you. You could write as your favourite character, someone completely fictitious or your past or future self - or just as you in this moment.

Write a love letter to fandom. It might be to fandom in general, to a particular fandom, favourite character, anything at all.

To Dark,

You're complicated as hell, and I'm not over the fates that the vast majority of the characters ended up with in the finale (even though the family tree makes it difficult to see how it could easily end any other way. Believe me, I've spent the last two years trying to work out a way that I can do it for one particular fic.) But you have great casting (seriously, just take a look at the Young/Middle aged/Old actors. At least one of the actors playing an 81 year old version of one character still surprises people to this day that he's not the 48 year old version in makeup and a wig.) and characters, and have provided me with so much writing inspiration.

To Lost,

My first fandom, and still my all time favourite, the one that first got me exploring the backstories of lesser ficced characters (and trust me, you have a lot) and playing with timelines, the one that first led me to start getting to know other fans, and the one that still has some influence over a lot of my more recent fandom choices. (Except you, Mr. Smoke Monster. Even 15 years on, you can jog on.)

To From,

The other one of my all time top three, that I wish was more appreciated and better known, but trust me, I'm trying to rectify that. Loving the characters, enjoying the mystery (we are starting to get answers at this point, so it doesn't seem to be a "making it up as they go along" thing) and you were the source of my favourite piece of fandom merch (Jade's cat shirt).

Challenge #3: Write a love letter to fandom. It might be to fandom in general, to a particular fandom, favourite character, anything at all.

Wow. Where do I even start with fandom?

Fandom changed the course of my life, for the better.

Fandom was how I, a sheltered teen growing up in a conservative country, encountered gay couples for the first time, when shipper drama had me fleeing to the slash side of HP fandom. [personal profile] senmut and [personal profile] ilyena_sylph introduced me to poly couples with Happy’Verse, and I’m still friends with both of them to this day. The very kind encouragement of the folks in the World’s Finest Superbat comm gave me the courage to publish my own fic, first Harry Potter and then Superbat. And then Numb3rs fandom (and specifically numb3rs100 and its weekly prompts) taught me how to write. And then my beloved co-writers taught me how to write things longer than drabbles.

I’ve lost a lot of those old fannish friends, whether they moved on from a fandom or I did, or when platforms shut down. But I’ve been lucky to keep some incredibly dear ones, and make excellent new friends, too. /waves to [personal profile] rhi and [personal profile] draconis, among others/

Speaking of new friends, I want to talk about one of the coolest things I’ve ever experienced, fandom-wise.

Numb3rs will always be the fandom of my heart. But it was never a particularly big show, and by 2022, the fandom was pretty much dead. And then someone (Hi Byrne!) wrote, and posted, an incredible story. Which inspired me to rewatch the series, and start writing again. And pull others in, too. And while Numb3rs will never be as active as it was, it’s still really cool to see the part I played in resurrecting it a little bit.

Another really awesome thing about fandom? Exchanges, and how much they’ve gotten me to push my limits. If it weren’t for exchange prompts, I would never have written To The Sticking Place, about Percy Weasley (and NOT a story I could have written in my 20s or without years of reading fic and meta). I definitely wouldn’t have been brave enough to think I could replicate Jane Austen’s style well enough to attempt thy love like a mark is stamp’d (I am a Jane/Colonel Fitzwilliam shipper to the end. Sorry, Bingles.) Or, even after shipper nonsense annoyed the fuck out of me, take on the challenge of writing The Goblin Emperor fic. Or write 10k of smut for an upcoming challenge, despite being ace.

Fandom also had me reading things I never would have encountered otherwise. Not just slash, although that's part of it. Thanks to fandom, I discovered drabbles, my beloved random fact fics, fic in the form of in-universe documents or meta, and a whole host of other things. I found writers who put the pros to shame, fics that made me gasp at the brilliance of their creators. I can safely say that reading fic has been an education, as much in what I should strive for as what not to do.

Fandom also helped me reclaim my identity. When Numb3rs first aired from 2005-2010, I explained away some of the egregious errors in the show’s depiction of Amita (who was a Tamil American character played by a very westernized half-German actress) by making her half-Rajasthani. (It still didn’t fix everything, but it was better than nothing). When I returned to writing Numb3rs in 2022, I made a decision. Amita would be 100% Tamil Brahmin, and that would be enough.

Never mind that Hollywood thinks all Indians speak Hindi, love Bollywood, and subsist on naan and butter chicken. Never mind neither the showrunners nor the actress bothered to give Amita a defined backstory until s4, and even then, they chose the most goatfucking stupid way of going about it possible. I would write Amita as she should have been written, like the second-generation Tamil American daughter of immigrant parents with a connection to the old country the show said she was while failing utterly to depict it accurately.

That conviction led to me writing saaptiya and 25 Random Facts About Amita Ramanujan, two fics I’m incredibly proud of, with the support and encouragement of non-Desi friends. And in doing so, I healed a wound that I never realized had been hurting me for nearly two decades.

So yeah. Thank you, fandom. For everything.

01. Grab the nearest book.
02. Turn to page 126
03. The 6th full sentence is your life in 2026.

So the closest book to me was Indian Christmas: Essays | Memories | Hymns, about how the nearly 30 million Christians in India celebrate the festival.

Sentence #6 on page 126 is from the chapter 'Did Your First Christmas Cake Come Out Of An Ammunition Box, Too?' by Estherine Kine.

Mrs Tanquist baked her cakes in a big mud oven, but her students ingeniously used ammunition boxes after the men discovered they were airtight and preserved head very well.

So for context, cooking on gas ranges rather than wood- or kerosene-fired stoves only came to India in 1965, and even then, it was limited to larger urban areas. Electric ovens came even later - my mother, born in 1961, has stories of my grandma baking cakes in a 'sand oven' -  a large pot filled with sand that was heated over a flame, functioning as a sort of bain-marie. Even now, gas is standard in any home that can afford it rather than wood or kerosene. Electric stoves are not common, or are used as a sort of secondary cooking device, since power cuts are pretty common even in big cities.

The ammunition boxes mentioned were left by British troops when they quit the subcontinent in 1947. Mrs Tanquist, the wife of a missionary, taught the author's mother and her friends how to bake Christmas cakes, among other things.

Given the state of the world around us, let's hope this sentence heralds a transition to peace after years of conflict. We can hope, right?

(For my own sanity, I am choosing not to delve into RL politics on DW. Let's keep it that way in the comments, please.)

Pets! We know them, we probably have positive associations with at least one type of pet, and they've appeared in our creative endeavors since time immemorial. Considering that, we felt that a challenge revolving around them would be appropriate.

Challenge #2: Pets of Fandom

Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!

Okay, so I'm going about this one in two parts.

First, some sharing of historic Real Cat Fiction. This was my way of cheering myself up back in 2020-21 - I basically hated lockdown (for context to anyone who doesn't know me that well or at all, my family is pretty much scattered across the UK and I didn't end up seeing them for over a year even in the times when there was some loosening of restrictions). If you're in the UK you will be well aware of the various political scandals at the time (and even if you're not in the UK you probably picked up some of it). So this is basically Larry the Cat (and the other Whitehall felines Gladstone and Palmerston) getting the better of the government.

https://archiveofourown.org/users/creatureofhobbit/works?fandom_id=295954

(I've only linked to my own fics here, although more Larry the Cat does exist - I'll spare you the horror that is Boris Johnson getting pegged by Liz Truss.)

And for something new create for the challenge, here's a fic about Gretchen from Dark (a poodle who is sent through time from 1953 to 1986 and reunited with her original owners in the future):

Nothing here made any sense to Gretchen.

When Helge had thrown the stick into the caves for her, it had seemed just like any other time when he, or Claudia, or Egon or Doris, would have done so; Gretchen would find it, bring it back to whoever had thrown it, and that was what she thought would happen this time. But now she doesn’t recognise the house she’s been brought back to, and she’s confused by the people she’s with – the middle aged woman and the older man smell like Claudia and Egon, they sound like them, and Gretchen even thinks she can see the people she knew in their older faces now. But she still finds herself looking for the eleven year old Claudia, cannot understand why Doris Tiedemann no longer seems to be living in the family home, and is still getting used to this other person, the one called Regina (and her friend Aleksander who is often around), who seems to live here now but isn’t someone Gretchen remembers from before.

She’s seen Helge Doppler, too, (although is relieved not to have encountered his scary mother, Greta, so far; Greta always scowled if she ever caught sight of Gretchen) and wondered if he remembers her, if he can still remember throwing that stick that had led to Gretchen travelling forward in time. He still smells the same, too, although he too has changed physically; he has injuries to his face which Gretchen doesn’t remember him ever having had before. If she could speak the same language as him, Gretchen would be asking him right now whether he had known when he threw that stick that it would lead to her ending up in 1986; he probably didn’t, since it was the scent of her owner, Claudia, that Gretchen had followed, rather than Helge himself (but again, the woman who had opened that door for Gretchen looked different, older still even than the Claudia who is living here now and who seems to have no idea what had happened.) She’s seen that other friend of Claudia’s, Tronte, too; since he had only just arrived in Winden in 1953 she hadn’t spent that much time with him, but enough to be able to tell that this older man is the same boy who had just moved in with them.

Sometimes Gretchen wishes she had just turned around and gone back the way she had come, just dropped the stick at Helge’s feet and then waited for Claudia and Tronte to come back; at least that way she would be living the life she knew. And people would know her, too; since she isn’t able to communicate to the Tiedemanns that she’s still the same Gretchen who belonged to the family in 1953, they’re talking as though she’s a different dog altogether, calling her Gretchen because she looks just like the dog they used to know. If she could at least explain, maybe someone could help her get back to the Tiedemann family and home that she was familiar with; instead she’s left trying to navigate this new time, this family that are her own and yet not the family she knew.

Selena arrives at the tiny train station in the town of Quartz Creek with a backpack, a rolling suitcase, her dog Copper, and a postcard from her aunt, suggesting a visit. When Selena had finally decided she could not deal with her emotionally abusive fiancé any longer, that postcard gave her a destination. But when she reaches the town, after two and a half days of travel, she discovers that Aunt Amelia is dead, and has been for a year.

Selena has hardly any money, and it would be so easy to return to her poisonous partner and let him run her life, but she hesitates. And as she's hesitating, she meets a variety of kind but eccentric townspeople who suggest that there is no reason why she can't simply take over her aunt's house, known as Jackrabbit Hole House. Even in a town where it's far more common for a house to have a name than not, this one is puzzling. Jackrabbits, one of the residents informs her, don't live in holes.

Despite all the minor issues that one might expect in a house that's been all but abandoned in the U.S southwestern desert for a year, Selena finds the place surprisingly comfortable. Her next-door neighbor Grandma Billy keeps her supplied with eggs and other miscellaneous food, and the local church has a potluck supper multiple times a week. She also discovers, when she goes to buy Copper some dog food, that Aunt Amelia left several hundred dollars of credit at the local store, which the store owner insists is Selena's now. With Grandma Billy's help, Selena even starts to recover her aunt's vegetable garden.

Everything is fine until she starts hearing voices. Then there's that creepy statuette in the main room. And one morning, she finds she's not alone in her bed.

Cut for more, including some spoilers )

This is the Southwest of Kingfisher's collection Jackalope Wives and Other Stories, where spirits, gods, and shapeshifters co-exist with vintage pickup tricks and ecotourists. Kingfisher seems at her best in this setting, and Selena's predicament is genuinely frightening at times.

The book is also, however, rather familiar. The outline of the story is very similar to Kingfisher's The Twisted Ones (2019), in which a young woman named Mouse travels with her beloved dog Bongo to inventory her late grandmother's house and finds all manner of creepiness. She deals with these manifestations with the help of eccentric locals. The Twisted Ones is actually a more complicated story, probably because it's a pastiche of a 1904 horror short story called “The White People," by Arthur Machen. Snake-Eater is also shorter: 267 pages to 399 for The Twisted Ones.

To me, Snake-Eater is the more engaging story. In the acknowledgments, Kingfisher reminisces about growing up in the Southwest. I knew she had moved there recently, but I didn't realize that she was a returnee when she did so. That may be why this story feels more full of life than the earlier work.

I think I'll be re-reading this one. I've never bothered with that for The Twisted Ones.

I'm CousinShelley at AO3.

Please don't feel constrained by my prompts. I ramble about what I love and offer a lot of ideas mostly because it's fun for me. The ideas are there if you want one. And if a fandom has fewer prompts and less rambling than some others, that doesn't mean I love or want it any less.

General Do Not Wants (DNWs)

  • Major character death, noncon, underage
  • Anything related to COVID19 or politics
  • Unrequested 1st-person POV except epistolary, 2nd-person POV that involves romance or sex, readerfic
  • AUs (setting, omegaverse, genderswap, etc.), including speculative elements like ghosts or sex pollen in non-speculative canons (canon divergence is fine)
  • Non-canon disabling or fatal illness or injury, self-harm, suicide
  • Bleak, hopeless endings
  • Original character or unrequested character POV, script format, unrequested dialogue-only, lapslock (but lowercase titles are fine)
  • Unrequested gender, asexuality and neurodivergence headcanons
  • Cruelty to animals or animal death
  • Unrequested infidelity and friend/partner betrayal
  • Focus on Thanksgiving/Christmas holidays, unrequested crossovers, crack fic
  • Focus on weddings/marriage/getting married (characters can be married, but don't make marriage a plot point), kidfic, pregnancy or birth of any kind, including eggs
  • BDSM, D/s and/or consent negotiations, sex toys, sexting, mommy/daddy kink
  • Generic dirty talk, porn film dialogue during/about sex, calling someone slut, whore or other names
  • Sexual pain and torture, hitting, suffocating, dehumanization, humiliation, including bad sex, ruined orgasms and mentions of a small or flaccid penis, age-regression/age play
  • Vomiting, coughing up anything, flatulence, body secretions or wastes (except sweat and blood), spitting, squirting and come play. (Come is fine, even a brief description, but please don’t focus on it.)
General Things I Like

  • Friendship, found families, loyalty, love, deep emotional connections, devotion, displays of affection and respect
  • Third person POV
  • Flirting, pining, sexual tension, getting together, mutual pining with a happy ending, unrequited love finally realized
  • Missing scenes and fix-its, as well as case-fic and plotty stories
  • Protectiveness and characters sacrificing their own comforts to help others, anything for you
  • Hurt/comfort, especially after a nightmare, tending wounds, caring for them when they're ill or injured, hovering after something traumatic and trying to take their mind off things
  • Tropes like only one bed and every other possible bedsharing scenario, fake couple/marriage leading to the inability to keep hiding feelings, undercover as gay that leads to feelings realization, forced proximity, and bonus if there’s peril
  • First kiss, first times, first realization of feelings, thank god you're alive/we're alive kisses and hugs
  • Humor, snark and banter, laughing and joking with each other
  • Happy or at the very least ambiguously hopeful endings
  • I like stories with no sex, fade-to-black, or full-on smut, so write whatever level you prefer.
  • I do like at least as much if not more focus on the emotions as on what body part goes where or what position people are in.
  • Porn with feelings and emotional or romantic sex
  • Dubcon when requested
  • Desperate kisses and one or both partners overwhelmed with passion and feelings
  • Manhandling and displays of strength, up against the wall sex
  • Kneeling (any reason but especially for oral sex or to kiss knees or thighs or anything like that, grand)
  • Penetrative sex, oral sex, fingers, frottage, mutual masturbation or one watching the other
  • Naked and half-naked or one clothed and the other naked, basically any combo of clothed/not clothed
  • Necking, petting, face and neck and body stroking, kissing and/or sucking or licking pretty much anywhere
  • I really like up against the wall, taken from behind, and one riding the other, but any positions are fine
  • Thank god you're/we're alive sex
  • One character being suddenly so overcome with feeling and desire for the other they kiss them and initiate things out of the blue, like they can't wait another second, love those big music swell moments
  • Sex pollen scenarios in speculative canons, especially with one or both try to resist, thinking the other wouldn't want it (but they really do) and all the angst and feelings that go along with that
  • With appropriate pairings, like vampires, blood drinking and/or licking blood off the other’s mouth, face, neck, etc. can’t go wrong.

Dead (2020)

  • Dane Marbeck & Jayson Tagg
  • Khalid Kattan/Jayson Tagg

I had fun with this movie but found myself craving more about the relationships. I would enjoy something focused on Jayson/Khalid from before Khalid was murdered that shows their growing relationship or Dane & Jayson after Jayson's murder that shows their growing friendship. Feel free to throw Jayson's sister in there in any capacity if you want. She's fantastic.

Prompts, if you want some:

  • Jayson was obviously in love with Khalid but could barely even admit that to himself. I'd love to see your take on how they met and got started seeing each other. What drew them together? Did they meet at a club, or was Jayson on duty as a cop and they encountered each other after he was called to investigate something? Was Khalid the victim of some kind of crime or a witness that Jayson had to interview? You get to decide.
  • We know almost nothing about Khalid, so feel free to give him any kind of backstory/profession or personality that you want to. So little about him was explored that he would seem like just a hot guy with a pretty face if not for Jayson being in love with him, which shows that there must have been a lot more to him than that.
  • Glimpses of their relationship and Jayson falling hard for him, and why he thought he had to try to fight it and act casual, would be fun. I don't think they were seeing each other long-term by the Khalid died, but Jayson still obviously fell hard, so I'd love to see glimpses of how that happened.
  • For Dane & Jayson, I would love a missing scene or scenes of them working together to find Jayson's killer that show their friendship growing. Funny, maudlin, downright tearjerking moments are all fine. I'd just really like to see more of them genuinely starting to care about each other.
  • It would also be fun to see their interactions when Jayson was alive and jump to one after to show what was probably a pretty funny cop/stoner dynamic before compared to the genuine caring after they started spending time together to find Jayson's killer.
Strangers on a Train (BBC Radio 1996)

  • Charles Bruno/Guy Haines

This version is available right now on YouTube and the Internet Archive. It's striking how much more obsessive and unhinged Bruno is here than in the film and how little a sense of self-preservation Guy has from the get-go, even though Bruno's sort of manic-sounding personality is a veritable quilt of red flags.

Bruno feels far less menacing in this version and less resentful of Guy's success and status. He seems to want to be part of it more than anything, and is so much more desperate and needy, even telling Guy that he loves him after he's murdered his wife and eventually killing himself over the fact that Guy wants nothing to do with him after everything is said and done.

I'd love something that leans into that obsessive, destructive kind of attraction and whatever manipulation and scheming you come up with for Bruno to keep Guy in his life. Despite my DNW for bleak endings, I don't need a happy ending here. I don't want Guy or Ann to die, but Bruno's eventual end can hang over it, or it can end with Guy in a place with Bruno where he's not thrilled to be. I would like there to be a sense of him wanting Bruno too, even if he hates that he does.

It can be horny as hell or focused on the tension, feelings and manipulation. I'm good with any of it.

Prompts, if you want some

  • Bruno doesn't just extort a return-the-favor murder, but also sexual favors out of Guy. This can be super duper dubcon, but no outright non-con. Basically, have Bruno manipulate or menace Guy and/or get him hot, and I'll be happy. Demanding sex to not go to the police fits pretty seamlessly into the story, and I'd love for Guy to enjoy even if he feels guilty or embarrassed by it. Giving in because he "has to" even though he secretly wants it.
  • A canon divergence where Guy convinces him to come down and saves his life, and where that might lead. How does he convince him? Is calling him Charlie and saying a nice thing or two all it takes, or does he have to imply or promise more? How far will he go to keep from having to live with the guilt or regret of seeing Bruno kill himself, and is there more to it, like an odd attraction he hasn't admitted to himself?
  • Guy decides that the only way out of the relationship is to kill Bruno, but then finds he can't do it.
  • Something more happening between them on the train when they first meet would be fun, something to help explain Bruno's obsession and affection even more. They were both drunk at some point, and they're in Bruno's private drawing room, so just about anything could happen. And Guy seemed to enjoy the admiration more and more over the course of the ride. It's notable how everyone basically rolls over Guy. Anne, his friend and Bruno basically lead him by the nose or ignore his protests and do what they want. Guy was talked into joining Bruno for a drink and dinner so easily, and it's not a stretch to think he could be convinced into a quick fling before things go off the rails, since it seems anybody can talk him into or out of anything.
  • The best way Guy can think of to get Bruno to leave his wedding (or Bruno can just outright state that he won't leave until this happens) is by spending a few minutes together with him somewhere the guests can't see.
  • Bruno expressed the thought that he'd considered getting rid of Ann and having Guy all to himself. And he's constantly threatening to tell when he wants to get his way. Maybe Guy is willing to go to any length to protect Ann from both their new life falling apart because Bruno tells and/or the risk of Bruno wanting to remove her from Guy's life.
  • Bruno sets up an attack on Guy solely for the purpose of rescuing him before he can be hurt or killed and trying to get Guy closer to him and grateful to him for that. In can be in front of Ann if you want to include her, so he can seem a hero to her and think he's worming his way deeper into their lives.
  • Bruno sounds younger here, talking about his father locking up his car and such. Why is he such a momma's boy, and why does he hate his father so much? An abuse backstory, something that explains why he's so messed up, could be interesting. Was he physically or sexually abused by his father? Is there an incestuous dynamic or outright relationship between him and his mother? Maybe these things come to light and Guy feels things about and wants to help or doesn't want to make things worse by refusing him.
  • It would be fun to see Guy turn the tables at some point and get the upper hand, or at least think he has the upper hand. Bruno loves him and wants to be the most important thing in his life, but maybe Guy is the one that pushes it into something physical as a way to gain control of the situation.

Blackpool | Viva Blackpool (TV)

  • Peter Carlisle/Ripley Holden

I love that they're both incredible shits who make bad choices for different reasons of differing severity but deep down where it counts most they love the people they love and will protect them at any cost. And that they develop a sort of grudging understanding and maybe even a bit of respect despite their vast differences.

I'd love to see what kind of silly (and tense and/or hot) situation would lead to them kissing or fist-fighting or protecting each other or doing anything else, but as long as they're interacting in the way they do on the show, it'll be fun.

Prompts, if you want some:

  • Ripley is attracted to Peter from the beginning and Peter knows it (and reciprocates). I think Ripley's intimidated and a bit resentful of the guy he sees as someone thinking he's better class, but Peter turns him on, and he hates that. Of course, Peter loves that. I feel like this ship was made for all the angry, smart-assed flirting.
  • Feel all kinds of freaking free to give the These Boots are Made for Walking dance a different ending where Peter doesn't walk off. Change parts of it and somehow making it sexier than it already is. Hoo boy!
  • I also really like the idea of it not being a song and dance, but much of the same choreography in an argument or a showdown about the murder, or just their oil and water personalities. I mean, doing some of that stuff outside of a musical background . . . I envision angry, sexy things, almost competitive, in an "I'll show that punter who does it best" kind of way. Angry kissing and sexual tension FTW.
  • A more pointed conversation after Peter walks in on the forehead kiss in Ep 4 with "I'm not interrupting anything, am I?" and Ripley's so irritated.
  • When Ripley goes to confront Peter after finding Danny on the railroad tracks and confesses to moving the body, there's a lot of talk about him wondering it would take for Peter to look the other way about things. Maybe they can work something out?
  • In the silly fantasy pool sequence, there's a lot of angrily shoving each other's head down under the water. Have fun with that. :D
  • Peter's Freud remark (and perhaps continued ones) would go the extra mile if everything was sexually charged.
  • Maybe Ripley's watching Peter eat an ice cream cone the way he does, like he's trying to get it off, and he has thoughts. Or take 30 seconds of the Boots dance and share what one person is thinking or conversation they're having when their foreheads are pressed together instead of singing.
  • For something on the angstier or more serious side, have one incredibly jealous of the other. Ripley's off on another extra-marital and Peter's jealous. Maybe Ripley's jealous of Peter's youngish partner? Angsty, angry sex, angry passion, always a good time.

Challenge #1

The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

Well, pretty much nothing has changed from my original introduction post, so that's here:

https://tellshannon815.dreamwidth.org/10100.html

Fandom wise, my three all time ultimate favourites are Lost, Dark and From, followed very closely by Yellowjackets and School Spirits, then Fringe, The Wilds, The Way Home, Doctor Who, The Hunger Games. Older favourites include Vampire Diaries-verse, Pretty Little Liars-verse, Once Upon a Time-verse, Arrowverse, Game of Thrones-verse, Supernatural. Riley Sager and John Marrs are my favourite authors.

Hoping to get the chance to discuss fandom and get to meet more people, also to cheer up the usual gloomy January.

Here are my answers to this week's Friday Five!

1. Do you mostly drink tap, filtered, or bottled water?

At home, filtered, always. When out and about, I try to have a reusable water bottle with me, or ask for filtered water at restaurants, but sometimes I am forced to buy bottled water.

2. Is it safe/recommended to drink tap water where you live? If not, why?

Nope! I live in a developing country and while the water where I live is decent quality, it's still not potable. Most people use some kind of water filtration/purification system, or buy purified water from commercial vendors.

3. What does the tap water taste/smell like where you live?

Neutral, with a slight hint of chlorine from the purification process if it's from the municipal supply. I'm lucky to live somewhere with excellent groundwater.

4. Do you collect rainwater? If so, what do you use it for?

Rainwater harvesting is done by the municipality here and is standard. (I live somewhere prone to droughts.) It's used to replenish the water table.

5. Do you/have you ever had restrictions on water use where you live? What did you have to change about your lifestyle?

I have been lucky enough to never have had restrictions on water use, because my building has a borewell, so we were almost never dependent on municipal water supplies. There was a period of time where we supplemented the water from the borewell buy buying water commercially, but the thing with living in a drought city is that you're naturally careful about water use - to this day, I only take Navy-style showers, and have a deep and abiding hatred for golf courses. (Seriously, they should not exist in climes drier than Scotland. Why the fuck are there so many in Arizona?!) Seeing California ideas of 'restricted' water usage after growing up with people lining up to fill pots when the water tanker came was a trip, let me tell you.

I really wanted to do more of a reveals post but I can’t say anything more than “Fallen London’s TTRPG and Dimension 29 lead me to Critical Role actual plays,” “haven’t done Yuletide in years because burnout,” and “changed my original idea of ‘how Pincushion [an undead fox] was created’ because there were already two stories like that on AO3, so stitched together some bits from the Soldiers’ Table to create an Occtis story.” So here’s my first Yuletide story in a long time, a pinch hit for [archiveofourown.org profile] euryydice. (Maybe you saw this accidentally revealed because I know I was hit with the Yuletide reveals bug. If so, pretend this is new to you.)

Challenge #1

The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

Hi! I'm Tammy. I'm in my late 30s, Desi, and have been in fandom since 2000.

I'm back on DW after a little over a year of a mostly unintentional break. I want to get back into the journaling habit, and be mindful and present when I post vs just doomscrolling. I'd also like to make some new friends!

Things I love:

Reading. Another of my goals this year is to read the books I already own. I mostly read romance, SFF, and light/cozy non-fiction. I've honestly tried litfic, but it bores me to pieces. I avoid the crap out of horror, dystopia, and anything too dark.

Podcasts. My favorites are the ones that teach you things, like Gastropod, Dressed, and Stuff You Should Know. I also adore Writing Excuses, which honestly is practically an MFA in podcast form.

Food. I am a competent cook at best, but I love thinking and talking about food and culture. Also, I am aggressively pedantic about that not all Indians eat naan and curry, damn it. Also that coconut anything does not belong in butter chicken.

Music: I am mostly a pop, pop-rock, and feminist country girlie, but I'm looking to expand my horizons. I also unapologetically love Taylor Swift.

My fandoms:

Numb3rs: The fandom of my heart. I just love how KIND this show is, and how well it's aged, a few episodes aside. Also? So much shipper potential, lol. (Even if I do bear a grudge about the portrayal of Amita that's as old as the show at this point. In my defence, we're from the same subcommunity and the writers... did not do their research.)

Harry Potter: More specifically, the first four books and parts of the fifth. No shade to those of you who loved the direction the series went in in Six and Seven, but it was epically not for me. Also, JKR and her bigoted bullshit can take a long damn walk off a short damn pier, but damned if I'll let her take away this thing I've loved since I was nine. I refuse to support her monetarily; that's my line in the sand. I'm honestly mostly here for AUs and fix-it fic, lol.

The Avengers: Specifically, the pocket universe post the 2012 movie where they're all in the Tower and also functional adults who are slowly learning to become a family. Not here either for SHYDRA or the whole 'my dad can beat up your dad' bullshit of the later movies. I'm a Stony girl at heart, but I'm willing to read a well-written Stucky.

The Goblin Emperor/ The Cemeteries of Amalo: Maia and Csethiro are adorable, as are Thara and his circle. I especially love the canonical pairing, which I won't spoil here, lol.

Superbat: Look, these two have been special since their first appearance together. I've loved them since I was a teenager, and their dynamic of best friends and partners, two men who are so different yet are so close.

Other more minor fandoms: Pride and Prejudice (love me some Jane/Colonel Fitzwilliam), Check, Please!, all Sherlock variations, LotR and the Hobbit, the Electra McDonnell spy thriller series, and L.A. Hall's The Comfortable Courtesan.

Writing this here for, say, if I find these things on AO3. Or if I want to write them, but two things: I’ve never written for Stranger Things and I have two ideas for new fic ideas. I also am looking at [community profile] rewrite_a_fic this year as well. TL;DR do I have the time? IDK.
